CBIP.INF Tue 16-May-1995, brought up to date Fri 21-June-1996
These are the charters of the comp.binaries.ibm.pc discussion
subgroups on the Usenet news. The charter took effect the 23rd of
July, 1991, and is edited using Bob Sloane's original posting on the
cbip reorganization. Please contact your system manager if your site
is not getting the newsgroups covered in this item.
news:comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d
The existing comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d is to be used for discussions
about the actual programs posted to news:comp.binaries.ibm.pc
(moderated), such as bug reports (but not articles about missing
parts) or requests about how to use the programs.
Please do not post your message to news:comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d when
it clearly belongs to news:comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted or some
non-cbip newsgroup. This error has been unfortunately very common
ever since the reorganization.
news:comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted:
This group is to be used to post requests/replies concerning where
to find ibm pc or compatible programs. Topics would include
requests for missing parts of binaries posted to
comp.binaries.ibm.pc and requests for specific programs.
In brief: Where do I find such and such shareware, freeware or
public domain MS-DOS program on the net.
The newsgroups comp.binaries.ibm.pc.{wanted,d} are discussion
newsgroups. Files and programs sent as binary postings (in uuencoded
format, mime-attachments or whatever the method) do absolutely _NOT_
belong to these newsgroups. The word "binaries" may confuse some
well-meaning readers, but binary postings are not appropriate in
discussion newsgroups.
Likewise, news:comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted is not intended for
selling or buying computer hardware. Nor is it meant for soliciting
trading individual copies of programs between the readers. The word
"wanted" may confuse some well-meaning users in this respect.
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
! The newsgroup below (CBIP.archives) is no longer operational !
! and has been replaced by the following to newsgroups: !
! news:comp.archives.msdos.announce (Moderated) !
! news:comp.archives.ms-windows.announce (Moderated) !
! news:comp.archives.msdos.d !
! news:comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss !
! which are described in CAM.INF. !
+--------------------------------------------------------------+
comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives: (Should be long gone! Don't use!)
This group was used to post announcements related to archive
sites for ibm pc and compatible binary files. Appropriate
articles included such topics as announcements of new binaries
available, connectivity problems with archive sites, and
bug/problem reports concerning programs from archive sites.
Requests concerning where particular programs are available were
not appropriate, and should have been posted to the c.b.i.p.wanted
group instead.
Please note that all these groups are about shareware, freeware and
public domain programs. Fully commercial MS-DOS programs are not
covered. They are covered in the newsgroups news:comp.os.msdos.apps
and news:comp.os.msdos.misc. Likewise OS/2 is not covered. It has
newsgroups of its own.
------------- Further information from Timo ------------------------
With the natural exception of administrative postings and other
clear-cut cases we should not crosspost to the cbip discussion
subgroups.
If your subject is not covered at all in the cbip.{wanted,d}
discussion subgroups then you should search for a suitable
alternative newsgroup. Please do not post off-topic postings to the
cbip discussion subgroups. It is not possible to give fool-proof
all-round advice on the alternatives, but it would seem that fairly
often one of the groups below might turn out to be suitable. The
letter (M) stands for moderated.
